About this Artwork

Field Effect Transistors, or FETs, are the most common type of transistor found in today’s microcomputers. Bipolar, or Junction, transistors are typically found in high-speed computers and devices. Although Field Effect and Bipolar transistors are made with the same silicon materials and processes, they operate very differently. Transistors, and the current they switch, can be compared to a hose and a faucet. The Bipolar transistor is like the faucet that blocks the current flow. The FET works more like a hand squeezing the hose to turn the current on or off. Bipolar transistors got an early lead, and were fast and hot. FET chips were cheaper because they were cooler, easier to make, and much denser.

This artwork includes 3 elements. The art on the front is of a MOS FET chip. It has a MOS FET. On the back is a narrative describing the artwork and the FET, and the artist’s signature.

    Framing: 

    The artwork is framed in an 11"x14" black shadow box frame, with glass. All framing materials are acid-free. A narrative about the artwork that includes the artist’s signature is placed on the back of the artwork.
