About this Artwork
This artwork is a mixed media display celebrating the Intel 4003. The Intel 4003 was a multi-function I/O device for the Intel 4004. The 4003 contained one shift register of 10-bits. Multiple 4003s could be cascaded to increase the effective register size. The 4003 received data in serial fashion from the 4004. The data could be output as serial data, or could be made available as 10-bits in parallel. As new bits would arrive in the 4003, the existing bits would be bumped over to the next bit locations in the shift register. Once the data was loaded, the 4004 would enable the 4003's bits to be read out.
