Chain Links - Throw Pillow
About the Artwork
I shot this image with a bright white reflected light and a warm yellow light from the side. The result was an image that emphasized the edges of the structures on this memory chip. This is a section of a memory chip called the Interconnect. On the sides, you see the memory cells, but the gold vertical lines in the middle are responsible for getting the information bits into and out-of the cells. These vertical lines are aluminum traces that connect various parts of the chip together and also connect the chip to the external leads. The silicon pads that connect these traces to the memory cells look like chain links. These "chain links" are built up layers to provide links and switching within the chip. The chip requires that each of the links work correctly, if it is to function properly. So, just as a chain, a chip is only as good as its weakest link.
